Clinical Supervision

I have been a Texas Board-approved Supervisor for those who hold a Texas LPC-Associate license and are working towards their full licensure for more than 15 years. I provide both individual and group supervision. Given that I am a university professor in a graduate-level counseling program, I am keenly aware of the developmental and skill-building processes of student counselors and counselor associates. Furthermore, I have significant clinical experience in areas such as those in crisis, substance use and misuse, serious mental illness as well as couples, children and families and LGBTQ+ clients. In addition, I work with military personnel and their families via GiveAnHour's program.

My approach to supervision could be best described as collaborative, relaxed and empathic. It includes  processing of both clients' issues and counselor's reactions, skill-building, problem solving, and critical thinking.  The underpinnings of my supervision follow the central themes present in Person-Centered, Existentialism, Narrative therapy, as well as mindfulness-based approaches. For those of you seeking supervision, whomever you choose, interview them to ascertain if there is a good fit. You should feel comfortable, but also have the impression that your potential supervisor is competent. Supervision, either good or not so good, often has a profound impact on a novice counselor’s development and ultimately their confidence and effectiveness.  The best of luck in your pursuit of a most rewarding and wonderful profession!
